Self-awareness is the conscious knowledge of your own character, feelings, motives, and desires.
The Two Pillars of Self-Awareness
Internal Self-Awareness: Understanding your inner world—your values, passions, aspirations, and emotional triggers.
External Self-Awareness: Understanding how other people perceive you. This involves recognizing your actual impact on others versus your intended impact, which is crucial for building empathy and stronger relationships.
Self-discovery is the active, deeper exploration of why those patterns exist, uncovering core values, desires, and your authentic self (the "why" and "who").
Using awareness as a tool for transformative growth and change, making self-awareness and self-discovery complementary forces for personal development. Awareness shows you the loop; discovery helps you break it and find new paths.
Research1 shows that while 95% of people believe they are self-aware, only 10% to 15% actually meet the criteria. Developing this skill leads to better decision-making, higher job satisfaction, more effective leadership, and reduced stress in social interactions. In general, high internal awareness allows you to align your actions with your authentic self and core beliefs.
Since this is an ongoing, lifelong process centered on understanding your internal states—thoughts, emotions, and values—and how they align with your external behaviors, a combination of internal and external techniques can be used.
(Internal Techniques) - Meditation, Journaling, Introspection, Yoga, etc.
(External Techniques) - Requesting feedback from trusted individuals, connecting with someone who can help you explore deep rooted belief systems, thought patterns, behaviors, etc in a safe space where there is no judgement. (i.e. a Life Coach, Therapist, etc.)
